Kodungaloor Bharani Festival

Kodungaloor Bharani festival celebrated in the Malayalam month of Meenam, which falls in March- April showcases a rather unusual way of temple festival celebrations. This one of its kind festival is also the largest gathering of Oracles. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali. Though the festivities gain momentum a month ahead, the last three days marks the mystique spectacle.

‘Kaavutheendal’ is the most stunning ritual of the festival. Thousands of Oracles transform the temple compound into a mystique frenzy. Smiting themselves with ritual swords until their foreheads are smeared in blood, also hurling obscene folksongs at the goddess which is of sexual persuasion.  The festivities break all norms of behaviour and is open to all unimaginable taboo songs.
