Koodalmaanickyam Temple, Irinjalakuda

The chief presiding deity of the Koodalmanickyam temple is Lord Bharatha and it is perhaps the only temple in India dedicated to Lord Bharatha.

This 9th century temple has a gorgeous eleven day long annual festival in the Malayalam month of Edavam (April – May). The festival begins one day after the renowned Thrissur Pooram. The celebrations include every element and ensemble of any temple fest in Kerala, the pomp, the vibrance, the energy and so on.  Each of the eleven days of the festival a seeveli (procession of caparisoned elephants) are held twice, once in the morning and once in the night. Two unique features of seeveli at Koodalmanickyam is that the ornate headgear of seven of the elephants are made of gold and the rest in pure silver. The second is that the main elephant which carries the deity has two baby elephants on both sides. The last two days of the festival features brilliant traditional orchestra called, ‘Panchavadhyam’.
